The Role

We are seeking a passionate and driven Deputy Editor to join the Future Perfect team. This is a full-time, permanent position reporting to the Future Perfect Editor.

Responsibilities:

• Drive daily coverage for Future Perfect, ensuring high-quality, impactful content.
• Oversee and manage our freelance program, cultivating relationships with talented writers.
• Edit and manage three staff writers: Sigal Samuel, Kenny Torrella, and Marina Bolotnikova.
• Assist the Future Perfect Editor in overall section management and staff development.
• Run the section in conjunction with the other Deputy Editor when the section editor is absent.

Qualifications:

• Proven experience in editorial leadership, preferably in a digital news environment.
• Strong understanding of effective altruism and its application to global issues.
• Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
• Collaborative and communicative team player.
• Passion for uncovering and sharing impactful stories that make a difference.

Qualifications

Required:

• 5+ years of experience in editorial roles, preferably in digital media.
• Proven track record of managing and mentoring writers.
• Strong understanding of editorial processes, including fact-checking, editing, and publishing.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Passion for Future Perfect's mission and subject areas.

Preferred:

• Experience with freelance management and budgeting.
• Familiarity with SEO best practices.
• Knowledge of effective altruism and related fields.
• Experience working with data and research.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Daily Operations

• Oversee the daily editorial workflow of Future Perfect, ensuring timely and high-quality publication of articles.
• Manage and edit content produced by three staff writers: Sigal Samuel, Kenny Torrella, and Marina Bolotnikova.
• Collaborate with the Future Perfect editor on content strategy and editorial direction.
• Oversee the freelance writer program, including assigning stories, editing submissions, and managing payments.

Section Management

• Assist the Future Perfect editor in managing the section's budget and resources.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of Future Perfect's editorial calendar.
• Represent Future Perfect at internal and external events.
• Run the section in conjunction with the other deputy editor when the section editor is absent.

Content Development

• Pitch and develop original story ideas aligned with Future Perfect's mission and editorial focus.
• Stay abreast of current events and trends relevant to Future Perfect's subject areas.
• Cultivate relationships with experts and sources in relevant fields.

Candidates interested in the Deputy Editor Future Perfect position at Vox Media, LLC will first submit their resume and cover letter through the company's online portal. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a phone interview to discuss their qualifications and experience in more detail.
