The Role

We are seeking a talented and experienced Backend Engineer to join our growing team. You will play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining the core infrastructure that powers Wattpad's platform, serving millions of users daily.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable and reliable backend systems using Go and PHP.
• Contribute to the development of new features, tools, and services.
• Optimize existing systems for performance and reliability.
• Collaborate with other engineers to define best practices and ensure code quality.
• Mentor and support junior engineers.
• Research and implement new technologies to address scaling challenges.

Qualifications

• 5-7+ years of experience in software development.
• Proven experience with monitoring and maintaining distributed systems at scale.
• Strong proficiency in Go and PHP.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, etc.) and container orchestration tools (Kubernetes, ECS).
• Familiarity with Docker and CI systems (TravisCI).
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible) is a plus.

Compensation

• Salary range: $120,000 - $160,000 per year (CAD).

Qualifications

Required:

• Software Development Expertise: 5-7+ years of proven experience in software development, demonstrating a strong understanding of software development principles and best practices.
• Distributed Systems Proficiency: Hands-on experience with monitoring and maintaining large-scale distributed systems, ensuring high availability and performance.
• Go and PHP Mastery: Proficiency in both Go and PHP programming languages, with the ability to write clean, efficient, and maintainable code.
• Cloud and Containerization Knowledge: Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, etc.) and container orchestration tools (Kubernetes, ECS). Familiarity with Docker and CI systems (TravisCI) is essential.
• Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) Experience: While not mandatory, experience with IaC tools like Terraform or Ansible is a significant advantage.

Preferred:

• Experience in a fast-paced, agile development environment.
• Contributions to open-source projects.
• Passion for storytelling and the creative community.

What You'll Do

• Design, develop, and maintain core platform functionalities within a high-traffic, distributed system.
• Contribute to the development of new features, tools, and services using Go and PHP.
• Identify and implement solutions to enhance the reliability and performance of existing systems.
• Collaborate with other engineers to establish best practices and provide technical guidance.

• Research and integrate emerging technologies to address scaling challenges.

• Participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall improvement of code quality.

• Work closely with product managers and designers to understand user needs and translate them into technical solutions.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in a timely and efficient manner.
• Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in software development.
