Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Underwriter to join our growing team. In this role, you will independently underwrite new business and renewals, utilizing Gravie's proprietary underwriting engine. You will assess group-level risk, generate competitive pricing proposals, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive underwriting best practices and refine plan designs.

Responsibilities

  • Independently underwrite new business and renewals using Gravie's proprietary underwriting engine.
  • Analyze group-level risk, claims experience, demographic data, and utilization trends to generate competitive pricing proposals.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Account Management, and Product teams to implement underwriting best practices and refine plan designs.
  • Communicate rates and plan details to Sales and Account Management teams.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of underwriting experience, including 1-2 years with stop loss and/or level-funded health plans.
  • Proven ability to independently underwrite standard and moderately complex cases.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to confidently interact with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively with minimal supervision.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $58,600 - $97,600 annually.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including alternative medicine coverage, flexible PTO, paid parental leave, paid holidays, 401k program, cell phone reimbursement, transportation perks, education reimbursement, and 1 week of paid paw-ternity leave.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Actuarial Science, Finance, Business Administration) or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in health insurance underwriting, with a minimum of 1-2 years specializing in stop loss and/or level-funded health plans.
  • Proven ability to independently underwrite a range of cases, from standard to moderately complex, utilizing underwriting guidelines and proprietary systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to interpret data, identify trends, and make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams (Sales, Account Management, Product) and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.

Preferred:

  • Experience with health insurance pricing models and actuarial principles.
  • Familiarity with industry regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite New Business and Renewals: Independently assess and underwrite new group health plan applications and renewals using Gravie's proprietary underwriting engine.
  • Analyze Risk and Price Plans: Evaluate group-level risk factors, including claims experience, demographic data, and utilization trends, to generate competitive pricing proposals.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with Sales, Account Management, and Product teams to implement best underwriting practices and refine plan designs.
  • Communicate Pricing and Plans: Effectively communicate quoted rates and plan details to Sales and Account Management teams, ensuring clear understanding and alignment.
  • Maintain Underwriting Standards: Adhere to established underwriting guidelines and regulations, ensuring accuracy and compliance in all underwriting activities.
