About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Editor to join our dynamic digital editorial team. This role is based in New York and is fully remote.

Responsibilities

• Line edit and top edit a variety of digital travel content, including inspiration stories, intel pieces, longreads, and quick hits.
• Craft compelling headlines and display copy.
• Package stories for optimal online presentation.
• Develop fresh content ideas and assign articles to freelance writers.
• Cultivate relationships with a diverse network of freelance writers.
• Write and update articles as needed.
• Organize and maintain content calendars.
• Attend industry events and meetings.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of hands-on text editing experience.
• 5-7 years of experience in a deadline-driven journalism environment.
• Exceptional line editing, story shaping, and packaging skills.
• Strong reporting experience and knowledge of fact-checking best practices.
• Meticulous attention to detail and grammar.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote environment.
• Experience assigning and commissioning articles.
• Experience working in a CMS.
• Experience writing newsletters.
• Experience with scriptwriting and capturing footage for social video.
• A genuine passion for travel and a desire to explore innovative storytelling approaches.

Compensation

$90,000 - $95,000 per year.

• Excellent written communication skills with the ability to write clear, engaging copy and guide others in doing the same.
• Adaptable storytelling skills, capable of transitioning seamlessly between long-form features, short news items, roundups, and destination spotlights.
• Experience assigning and commissioning articles from freelance writers.
• Experience working within a Content Management System (CMS).
• Experience writing newsletters.
• Passion for travel and a desire to explore innovative approaches to travel storytelling.

• Experience scriptwriting and capturing footage for social video.

Editorial Duties

• Edit and refine a variety of digital travel content, including long-form articles, short news pieces, destination spotlights, and listicles.
• Craft compelling headlines and display copy that captures reader attention.
• Package stories for optimal online presentation, ensuring clarity and visual appeal.
• Develop original content ideas and pitch them to the editorial team.
• Assign articles to freelance writers, providing clear briefs and editorial guidance.
• Cultivate relationships with a diverse pool of freelance writers, fostering collaboration and ensuring high-quality contributions.
• Write and update articles as needed, adhering to AFAR's style guide and editorial standards.
• Collaborate with the editorial team to organize and develop content calendars, ensuring a consistent flow of engaging content.
• Stay abreast of industry trends and participate in relevant events and meetings.

Content Management

• Contribute to the development and maintenance of AFAR's content management system (CMS).
• Write and edit newsletters, ensuring timely delivery and engaging content.
• Create scripts and capture footage for social video content, showcasing AFAR's unique travel perspective.

Afar begins the hiring process by reviewing applications for the Senior Editor position. Candidates whose experience and skills align with the job description are invited to complete a written assessment. This assessment evaluates editing skills, storytelling ability, and understanding of travel content. Shortlisted candidates then participate in a virtual interview with the editorial team. This interview focuses on the candidate's experience, editorial vision, and collaborative approach. Afar may also conduct a second interview with senior leadership to assess cultural fit and strategic thinking. The final stage involves a practical editing test, where candidates refine a sample travel article. Afar makes its hiring decision based on the candidate's performance throughout the entire process.
